To report a threat of school violence before the instigator has a chance to act on his/her intentions, please contact Speak Up at 1-866-SPEAKUP (that is 1-866-773-2587)

I would like to thank all of the Survivors and others who have contacted me with information about school violence.  I really do appreciate the help, for without their help, several of these occurrences would not be here.

One other thing I would like to ask of those who read over this list of tragedies is this: If you can provide me with any more details of any of these incidents, I would greatly appreciate the information. Or, if you know of another violent act at a school that is not on this list, please forward that information to me as well.  The link to my e-mail is above.

Freshman Jaylen Fryberg opened fire on a group of students at a table in his school's cafeteria today.  It was 10:45 in the morning when he began his attack.  He used a .40-caliber handgun to kill Zoe Galasso, a female student he shot in the head, and wounded six others. Two of the wounded students were his cousins.  After the initial burst of gunfire, Jaylen paused, and was intercepted by first-year social studies teacher Megan Silberberger.  The two struggled and the attack came to an end when a bullet struck Jaylen, bringing him down.  It is unclear if he committed suicide or was accidently shot by the gun during the struggle.  Shalyee Chucklenaskit, Gia Soriano and Andrew Frybergwere taken to Providence Everett Medical Center for treatment while Nate Hatch were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.  The remaining two students were treated at the scene.  Gia died on Sunday, October 26.  Shaylee died on October 31.  Andrew died on November 7.  All three students had head wounds. Nate was shot in the jaw.  Jaylen is a member of the Tulalip Indian tribe and he played on the football team.

About 12:30 this morning, the Strozier Library at FSU was still packed with students as they studied for upcoming exams.  Myron May walked into the library, pulled out a .380 semi-automatic pistol and began shooting at the students.  A minute after the first 911 call was placed, the police were on the scene.  Tallahassee and FSU police confronted Myron outside the library and ordered him to drop his gun.  He fired a shot at them and they returned fire, killing him.  Another minute had passed since the first 911 call, very fast response time and a quick end to this act of school violence.  Two students were transported to local hospitals while a third was treated at the scene.  Myron, 31, was an FSU alumnus and an attorney.

Seven Tehreek-e-Taliban gunman wearing shalwar kameez (military uniforms) used a ladder to scale the back wall to infiltrate the Army Public School this morning.  They made their way to the auditorium where student Abdullah Jamal said he was getting first-aid instructions and training when the shooting began.  The time was 10:30.  He was shot in the leg.  The Taliban then got up on the stage and continued to fire upon the students and staff.  After killing about 100 students in the auditorium, the Taliban then roamed the school.  The set fire to several female teachers and continued shooting.  Army commandos arrived quickly and exchanged gunfire with the instigators, who by now had taken several students and teachers hostage.  Six of the Taliban were killed by the commandos and one blew himself up.  Another large explosion was reported at the school.  The attack, siege and reclaiming of the school took nine hours.  The devastation they caused was tremendous as they killed 148 people, mainly students.  Pakistani officials reported 124 injuries from this attack.  The school teaches grades one through ten.

Garissa University College, Garissa, Kenya

Thursday, April 2, 2015

During morning prayers, which start at 5:30, masked Al-Shabab gunmen armed with AK-47 assault rifles and strapped with explosives, targeted Christians students at Garissa University College in northeast Kenya. They killed 148 people, mostly students, but this number also includes two security guards, one policeman and three soldiers. The wounded numbered at 104. There are 887 students at the school and six dormitories. The gunmen walked through three of them, and when they found a group of students hiding, they asked if they were Christian or Muslims.  The Christians students were shot and killed. When the Kenya military forces arrived, the gunmen took dozens of students hostage in a fourth dorm.  Four of the Al-Shabab gunmen were killed and this brought the attack to an end, just after dusk. Police arrested one of the gunmen as he tried to flee.
