To report a threat of school violence before the instigator has a chance to act on his/her intentions, please contact Speak Up at 1-866-SPEAKUP (that is 1-866-773-2587)

I would like to thank all of the Survivors and others who have contacted me with information about school violence.  I really do appreciate the help, for without their help, several of these occurrences would not be here.

One other thing I would like to ask of those who read over this list of tragedies is this: If you can provide me with any more details of any of these incidents, I would greatly appreciate the information. Or, if you know of another violent act at a school that is not on this list, please forward that information to me as well.  The link to my e-mail is above.

Huffman High School, Birmingham, Alabama

Tuesday, August 3, 2004

The 2004-2005 school year began with a shooting, even before classes started.  At most high schools, the football team and the marching band assemble a few weeks before school to practice their game and halftime routine for the fall season.  Huffman High is not an exception to the rule.  Today, during an early break at band practice, Jamil Elliott was shot in the shoulder by a fellow band member. The shooting took place on one of the school's parking lots around 8:45 a.m.  Jamil, 16, was rushed to Children's Hospital of Birmingham where he was treated and released.  Police took the unnamed shooter in to custody shortly after the shooting and charged him with attempted murder.  The next day, the school district installed surveillance cameras at Huffman High School.

The Nursery (Kindergarten) at Beijing University Number One Hospital, Beijing, China

Wednesday, August 4, 2004

With news that the kindergarten would be closing next month, 51-year-old Xu Heping lost his mind.  The doorman at the nursery had a history of schizophrenia, even being hospitalized at Beijing's Adning Hospital from May 11 to September 24, 1999.  Today, the children were playing outside in the schoolyard when Xu joined them.  He locked an iron door behind him, preventing the youngsters from escaping.  He pulled out a kitchen knife and began "hacking people up at the kindergarten."  A school cook heard the kids screaming and rushed outside to see Xu frantically slashing at the youngsters.  Teachers attempted to wrestle the knife away from him, but it wasn't until eight police officers who were dispatched to the nursery showed up before they were able to overpower Xu and arrested him.  During his rampage Xu wounded 15 young children, three teachers and killed a 4-year-old boy with the knife.  Most of the youngsters were children of the hospital workers.

After a quiet two week period, school violence pops up quite frequently over the next few entries.  Today, in the school's park, two teens fought it out until on of them, a 17-year-old male student, was stabbed in the stomach.  Police charged another 17-year-old male with the stabbing on Wednesday.

Highland High School, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Wednesday, August 18, 2004

Just after lunch today, a fight broke out between a 15-year-old male student and freshman male student from rival gangs.  During the fight, the 15-year-old pulled out a 5-inch pocket knife and stabbed the freshman in the abdomen.  The wounded boy was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital where he was treated for the stab wounds.  Police were able to apprehend the instigator and recover the knife.

Northwest Halifax High School, Littleton, North Carolina

Wednesday, August 18, 2004

In the small town of Littleton, North Carolina, school ended in violence today as two male students were involved in an altercation in the student parking this afternoon.  The students, a 14-year-old male and a 16-year-old male, let their bad-blood feud escalate into a fight.  The fight climaxed when the younger student slashed the 16-year-old across his chest.  The wounded teen was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released.  Police arrested the young instigator and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and carrying a weapon on school grounds.  Adults usually monitored the bus parking lot, but not the student parking lot.  Keith Hoggard, the school system's public information officer, said that may change in the future.

Hamilton High School, Memphis, Tennessee

Tuesday, August 24, 2004

This morning several students were fighting on the first floor of Hamilton High. One of these fighting students was James Carr (also known as James Perry).  Carlos Jackson, 17, intervened in the fighting group in an attempt to restore order.  James, 16, brought on pandemonium when he pulled out a handgun and fired a shot at Carlos.  The bullet lodged in the bottom of classroom door and no one was injured. The sound of the gunfire sent students running for cover.  James fled the scene during the pandemonium, but the high-quality video surveillance camera recorded the entire event and it allowed the police to pick up James the next day.  He was charged  with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

Westernport Secondary (School) College, Hasting, Australia

Wednesday, August 25, 2004

School violence travels down under again this month with another stabbing between feuding teens.  However, this time, the participants are both female.  With an ongoing schoolyard row between a 16-year-old student and a 14-year-old student, a violent ending wasn't too far away.  Today, the two female teens fought until the younger girl stabbed her opponent twice in the shoulder, about 9:15 a.m. (Australian time).  The wounded teen was taken to Frankston Hospital for treatment while the younger girl, from Crib Point, was charged with intentionally causing serious injury and other assault offences.  Hastings is south of Melbourne.

An Elementary School in Espanola, New Mexico

Thursday, August 26, 2004

(Webmaster's note: Normally I wouldn't report this next instance of school violence, for it is extremely rare that this simple act of violence receives this much police attention.  If I charted these acts of school violence by weapon, I believe this one would be the only one categorized under basketball.)

Today, an 8-year-old third grader hit one of his classmates with a basketball.  As a teacher tried to reprimand the youth, he raised his voice at the teacher. He was taken to the counselor's office where he was told to calm down and return to class or the police were going to be called.  He ran outside and continued crying loudly.  The boy's mother and the police were called to the school.  Two police officers arrived and gave the boy a choice: class or jail.  The boy got upset and cried all the louder.  So... the police officers arrested the 8-year-old for disorderly conduct (getting out of control and refusal to return to class), took him to the jailhouse, booked the youth and then released him to his parents.

Palm Bay High School, Melbourne, Florida

Thursday, August 26, 2004

Also today, another duo of male students got into a fight that climaxed with a stabbing.  Christopher Anthony Taitt, 17 and an unnamed 17-year-old male began fighting outside the faculty lounge of Palm Bay High this afternoon around 5:30.  The fight itself was the climax of an unnamed incident that took place earlier in the week.  Both of the teens were on campus at that time for evening adult education classes.  Christopher stabbed his opponent in the stomach and chest before teachers and other students were able to separate the fighting teens.  Christopher fled the scene and tossed the knife into the woods behind the school.  The unnamed wounded student was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center for treatment. The next day Christopher turned himself in and led police to the knife in the woods.  He was charged with aggravated battery and bringing a weapon to a school campus.

Proviso East High School, Mayfield, Illinois

Monday, August 30, 2004

About 2:30 this afternoon, while waiting to pickup his brother, Jermen Ocegueda was standing outside his vehicle.  He began arguing with a man in a tan Buick.  The exchange of words escalated rather quickly and soon the other man was outside of his car and he pulled out a gun.  The men struggled and 22-year-old Jermen was shot once in the chest.  Gunshots were also fired into the air.  After the shooting, the man got back into his tan Buick and fled.  Friends took Jermen to Loyola University Medical Center where he died.

Middle School No. 1, Beslan, North Ossetia, Russia

Wednesday through Friday, September 1 - 3, 2004

During the annual celebration to mark the beginning of the school year in Russia, 30 Chechen militants (men and women) took over Middle School No. 1 at 9:30 this morning.  Some of the militants had bomb belts strapped to them and all of them wore masks.  They forced the students, their parents and the teachers into the school's gym.  During the roundup, a dozen students and a teacher were able to flee from the school's boiler room.  Other students were also able to escape during the roundup.  The number of hostages swelled from 150 initially reported to over 1,200 during the three day siege.  As students fled, parents battled against the militants.  Police arrived and a gunfire broke out. A dozen people were killed with three teachers and two police being wounded. One of the dead was a father who struggled with the militants to protect his daughter. The militants lined up the students along the gym's window and said they would kill 50 students for every militant killed and kill 20 students for every militant wounded.  With their hostages secure in the school's gym, the militants had them tear up the floor boards where earlier in the summer the militants had hidden a cache of weapons. The militants laid trip wire throughout the school and placed two bombs in the basketball baskets in the gym.  These two bombs were wired to smaller bombs hanging above the floor. They also said they would blow up the school if the police stormed the building.  The Russian police force maintained a perimeter around the school and let the negotiations begin. Negotiations were spearheaded by pediatrician Lev Roshal, who worked with Chechen rebels during the Moscow movie theater hostage scene in 2002.  The militants refused food, water and medicine to be brought in during  the entire siege. This forced the hostages to drink their own urine after filtering it through their own, sweat-soaked clothing. On Thursday afternoon, the militants released 26 hostages.  On Friday morning chaos erupted.  The militants agreed to let emergency workers move in to remove the bodies of the dozen people killed on Wednesday.  As they moved in, one of the bombs in the basketball basket fell to the floor and detonated.  This caused a chain reaction of the bombs attached to it and the collapsed the gym roof, crushing many of the hostages to death.  As the roof came down, other hostages began to flee.  At this point, the hostages were dehydrated, nearly naked (for the gym was stifling hot with the number of people pack into it) and bleeding from wounds.  As they were fleeing, the militants began firing on them.  The Russian police returned fire and eventually stormed the battered school to bring the siege to an end.  During the pandemonium on the ground of students, parents, teachers, police and militants running all over the place, thirteen of the militants are able to flee the scene and head south where they took refuge in a nearby house.  The house is quickly surrounded by special forces and all the militants, nine of which are from Arab descent, are wiped out.  Three other militants retreated to the school's basement and held police at bay until Friday evening. The siege of Middle School No. 1 comes to a tragic end with 27 militants confirmed dead by the end of the day.  Once again, police miscalculated the number of dead and wounded; initially stating that only 100 people had been killed and up 250 wounded.  These numbers swelled to 335 dead (plus the 31 militants) and 704 wounded, making this the deadliest act of school violence that I have on record. For statistical purposes, I am putting this on Friday, September 3, 2004 as that is the day most of violence happened.  On Tuesday, June 21, 2005, the Supreme Court of North Ossetia began to hear testimony against the only surviving militant, 24-year-old Nurpashi Kulayev.  Several Survivors and relatives of those who died lined up to give testimony against Nurpashi.  On Friday, May 26, 2006, Nurpashi was sentenced to life in prison by Judge Tamerlan Aguzarov.  He would have received the death penalty, but currently there is a moratorium on capital punishment in Russia.  On Tuesday, July 31, 2007, the Beslan Mothers' Committee asked for more answers after they were anonymously mailed a grainy video of the end of the siege.  The video shows a figure on the roof of a building opposite the gym.  Two explosions are heard and billowing smoke appears from the side of the building. Gunfire erupts on all sides at that point.  Later in the video, two bomb-disposal engineers are shown discussing a hole in the wall of the gymnasium.  One of the engineers tells the other that the hole was produced from the outside of the building and did not come from inside the gymnasium.  One would hope that the Duma, Russia's parliament would reopen the case with this new evidence.

Vusi Mhlongo, 35, came to Newlands East Secondary School to talk to his ex-girlfriend, 31-year-old teacher Dorris Sangweni.  He asked for directions to her classroom and went there.  He asked her to come talk to him in the hall.  When Dorris joined Vusi in the hall, he shot her in the head and killed her.  After her body had collapsed to the floor, he shot her again.  He then fired a third bullet into his head and committed suicide. No motive or reason was give in the news story for this murder-suicide.

Kiona-Benton City Middle School, Benton City, Washington

Saturday, September 4, 2004

With the news of the Beslan school siege dominating the news, school violence in America marches on.  This evening, sixth-grade physical education teacher King Robert "Bob" Mars told friends he was going by the school to drop off a video tape of the school's first football game.  While he was in the school, around 11:30 p.m., he was confronted by two boys, 16-year-old Robert A. Suarez and 14-year-old Jordan E. Castillo.  They had been dropped earlier by Robert Suarez's grandmother who believed the boys had a ride back home.  They didn't, but their plane was "to stick somebody up for their vehicle."  They approached Bob when he got out of his Toyota Tacoma at the school.  They asked him for .50 cents to use the phone to call someone.  Bob didn't have any money on him, but he offered to let the boys use the phone in his classroom.  The trio went into the school and Robert Suarez called his 16-year-old girlfriend Angelica Ayala for a ride home. Angelica didn't have a car or driver's license and mother wouldn't let her leave this late hour anyway.  As the trio left the room, Jordan stabbed Bob, 44,  in the stomach.  As Bob lay dying in the hallway, the boys ransacked his truck and called another friend about midnight for a ride home.  Police got a break in this case as the two teens had earlier in the night attempted to rob another teen in the school's parking lot.  Robert Suarez was being held with probable cause of second-degree theft while Jordan was arrested for third-degree burglary charge from the earlier robbery attempt.  There was no signs of forced entry into the school, nor was there any signs that Bob had struggled with his attackers. On Friday, March 11, 2005, Robert Suarez was found guilty of first-degree murder. Two weeks later, Robert Suarez was sentenced to 26 years and 8 months in prison for planning the robbery.

Westminster City (High) School for Boys, Central London, England

Tuesday, September 7, 2004

At the end of the second day of the new school year, a 28-year-old French teacher was sitting at her desk marking books when she became aware of her classroom door swinging open.  She didn't look up and soon felt a strong arm around her neck.  At first she thought it was a student playing a joke on her, but the grip tightened as she was pulled out of her chair.  Her assailant, 15-year-old Dwayne Best, told her to be quiet as he easily dragged her across the classroom.  He applied more force to her windpipe and she began to breathe through her nose.  She still had hold of her pen, and she used it to stab Dwayne before dropping it to the floor.  He began to sexually assault her and threatened to kill her.  As she tried to push him away, he grabbed her waistband and ripped her trousers from her with one movement.  When she tried to resist, he head-butted her. The sexual assault became a rape that latest 12 minutes.  She had a very strong presence of mind to retain fluids from the boy in her mouth.  He finally fled the room, but closed-circuit television caught him on tape as he fled the building.  The teacher, with blood pouring out of her nose and down her back, ran downstairs to the school's office, where they could hardly recognize her with all the blood on her face.  She was taken to the medical room and given a paper cup, where she deposited the fluids.  She was taken to the hospital and treated for her physical wounds.  The mental ones still linger.  Dwayne was arrested on Wednesday and tried to explain that the blood on his trousers was from an attack on him at a south-east London train station.  He had turned 16 by the time his trial came up in the spring of 2005.  The fluids the teacher had spat into the cup was used to help police identify him by DNA.  During his trial at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, May 3, 2005, he plead guilty to the rape.  He was to be sentenced on Friday, June 17, 2005, but a judge delayed the hearing until the end of the month.  Dwayne was not in any of her classes and the closed circuit television showed him wandering around the school looking into classrooms before making the attack.  Initially, because of the boy's age, his name was not released.  Also, to protect the teacher's identity, the name of the school was not released.  However, by the time of Dwayne's trial in May, the name of school had been released.  Also at that time, the teacher had not yet returned to work.  Detective Chief Inspector Andy Rowell, of Operation Sapphire, New Scotland Yard's sex-crime investigation unit, said this of the teacher, "The victim in this matter has shown immense courage and bravery throughout the ordeal and during the police investigation.  She now wishes to embark upon a period of rebuilding her life."  On Monday, July 4, 2005, Dwayne was sentenced to life in prison by Judge Christopher Moss.  However, he would be eligible for parole in four and a half years and would not be released until doctors were convinced that he is no longer a threat to society.  On Tuesday, July 12, 2005, Judge Moss lifted the ban of using Dwayne's name saying in part, "... so the public may know who it was who perpetrated this dreadful crime."

The frustration of his students not learning Islamic religious verses got to teacher Abdul Mazid Sardar today when he pulled out a pair of scissors to scare them and impose class discipline.  He said "an evil force mounted on me" and he started snipping the ears of his students, all between the ages of six and nine.  Other staff members at the school heard the children's cries and they rushed in to stop Abdul from injuring anymore than he already had, 17.  Parents and relatives attacked Abdul, "who has now been sacked."  The school was created six months ago and only has 40 students with two teachers, Abdul and principal Abdul Mannan.  Abdul Mazid was taken into police custody and officially arrested on Thursday.

Eighth-grader Tarus Williams wanted to join the G-Unit, a local gang who took their name from rapper 50 Cent's stable of performers.  The G-Unit offered Tarus a choice between taking a beating, or fight one of the established members of the gang to prove himself.  Tarus,15, chose to fight Tyrus Strong, 13, in the school's second floor restroom this morning.  During the fight, Tarus collapsed and was rushed to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center where he died a short time later.  The police questioned Tyrus, and five other G-Unit members who were present during the fight.  Tyrus said Tarus hit his head on a toilet and he went to help him up.  As the boys left the restroom, Tarus collapsed and that is when faculty members found Tarus and called 911.  However, the medical examiner tells a different story, one that has Tarus' heart ventricular wall bursting from a massive direct blow to his chest. The medical examiner said that  hitting one's head on a toilet would in no way lead to the ventricular wall bursting.  Police arrested Tyrus, Artavis Branch, 13, Dammion Farmer, 13, Jeremy Henderson, 15, Mack Lewis, 15 and Antonio Taylor, 14 in the death of Tarus Williams.  For statistical purposes, I am only naming Tyrus Strong, 13, as the instigator in this school violence death.

Wirt High School, Gary, Indiana

Wednesday, September 15, 2004

During a fight this afternoon in the commons are near the gymnasium, one student pulled a .380 caliber Hi Point semiautomatic handgun from his waistband and fired it into the ceiling.  No one was injured, but it quickly changed the anxiety levels of all those who heard the gunfire.  Police were able to identify the student as 16-year-old Patrick Moore from the school's surveillance tape. For confirmation that it was Patrick on the tape, they asked Patrick's mother to come in and view the tape the next day.  She did, and then left the building with Patrick and by Friday his whereabouts were still unknown.  The school does have metal detectors on the main doors, but it is not uncommon for side doors by the lunch room to be opened during lunch, which is when police believe the gun entered the building.

Schenley High School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Tuesday, September 21, 2004

This morning, a 16-year-old male student from South Oakland arrived late at Schenley High School.  School officials close the main doors of the school, which have metal detectors, at 7:48 a.m.  This forced the freshman to enter the school from a side door near the cafeteria, where students are checked with metal detecting wands.  Apparently, there must have been several late students because the batteries in the wand had died when it came time to check the freshman, who had a 3-inch steak knife strapped to his leg.  He continued his normal routine until a special education student from the Hill District crossed his path.  The two teens argued for a few minutes until the young instigator pulled the knife from his leg and slashed his 17-year-old Hill District rival across the arm.  This occurred at 8:20 a.m.  The young instigator was arrested by public school police while the older, and wounded, teen was treated at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Nicole Lambert and Eric Schorling dated for almost a year before breaking up over the summer.  During their time together, violence crept in when Eric slapped Nicole outside of a Dairy Queen.  Their parents sat down together shortly thereafter and believed they had worked everything out.  16-year-old Eric had different plans.  He told his friends that he was going to stab Nicole. He even showed a couple of them the 8-inch kitchen knife earlier in the day after he slipped into Romeo High.  Eric is a former student of Romeo, and now attends Enterprise High School.  Authorities believed he slipped in with other students as just another face in the crowd.  Nicole, 16, was standing near the library when Eric came upon her from behind and stabbed her.  The knife just missed her lung and aorta.  He fled the scene and she walked more than 100 feet into history teacher Dave Robertson's classroom where he called 911.  The police found Eric hiding in a culvert in a field over a mile away and charged him with assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent.  On Tuesday, May 17, 2005, Eric pleaded guilty to assault with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a weapon with unlawful intent.  The assault with a dangerous weapon charge was dropped.  Just days later, he escaped from the juvenile detention center that was holding him.  He spread the word quickly that he was going to find Nicole again and finish the job.   He didn't get the second chance as police found him hours after he escaped.  Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Peter Maceroni set aside Eric's guilty plea and set a new trial date of October 25, 2005.  Before the escape, Eric was facing a minimum of 6 years and nine months.  Now the minimum is up to ten years.  After four days of testimony, a Macomb County jury took almost three hours to convict Eric of assault with intent to murder.  On Friday, December 17, 2005, Eric was sentenced to 10-15 years in an adult prison for stabbing Nicole in the back.  On Thursday, May 18, 2006, ABC's Primetime did a 10-minute news story on this act of school violence.

Islas Malvinas Middle School No. 2, Carmen de Patagones, Argentina

Tuesday, September 28, 2004

In one of the safest countries in South America, school violence erupted again like it has so many times in the USA. This morning, after the school assembled to observe the hoisting of the flag, a daily occurrence, a 15-year-old boy told a school employee that "Today is going to be a good day."  The boy, named Rafael S. and nicknamed "Junior" by his friends, was wearing black pants, black sneakers, a black t-shirt and a green 'military' vest.  He followed his classmates into their classroom, pulled out a Browning 9mm pistol from under his clothes and opened fire.  (Thomas Hamilton, the instigator in the Dunblane, Scotland school shooting in March 1996, also used a Browning 9mm pistol.) The teacher had not yet arrived and he said nothing prior to pulling the gun.  Rafael's first shots went into the wall and the students cowered under their desks.  As a few of them tried to talk to him, he turned the gun on the students and continued to fire. Two girls and a boy (ranging in age from 14 to 16) were killed from the flying bullets.  Five other students were wounded from the 13 rounds in his clip.  Rodrigo Torres was shot three times in the thorax and Pablo Saldías was seriously wounded. Nicholas Leonardi, Natalia Solomon and Cynthia Casasola were also wounded.  He left the room and reloaded, but the gun jammed.  While he was trying to clear the jam, another student jumped him and ended his eight minute rampage.  Rafael is the son of a sergeant major of the Naval Prefecture and it is believed he used his father's gun in this attack. Police detained him without incident in the school yard.  He was in shock and unable to speak.  Even after he was transferred to a juvenile court in Bahia Blanca, Rafael was still unable to communicate.  Police were not able to determine Rafael's motive for this act of school violence. Carmen de Patagones is about 610 miles south of Buenos Aires.

Raxavier Menyweather and two of his friends started calling women they knew from their cell phone numbers.  One of the women they reached was Kenneth Beck's girlfriend.  Raxavier, 21, and Kenneth, 20, talked several times on the phone to settle their differences.  They finally agreed to a face-to-face confrontation on the playground of Jefferson Elementary School this morning.  Raxavier brought his two friends, Kenneth brought a gun along with him.  During the exchange of words, Kenneth pulled out the handgun and shot three times.  One of the bullets hit Raxavier in the face, just below his left eye.  Raxavier survived this shooting and now has a blind spot in his eye.  Kenneth admitted to the police that he shot Raxavier and that he was on methamphetamines at the time. Police, and a judge, didn't buy that excuse.  Kenneth was sentenced to 15-20 years in prison for first-degree assault, 30 to 50 years for using a gun to commit a felony and 18 to 24 months for assault by a confined person for an unrelated July 13 incident.

Late this evening, Adymn Calcagni went to his former girlfriend's home with a sawed-off shotgun.  The police report didn't state whether the gun was visible or not as Adymn spoke to her parents.  They refused to let him inside.  The 15-year-old sophomore fired two shots into the air and continued walking into the night.  The parents called police and a search of the surrounding neighborhood began.  Adymn walked to his high school campus and fired two more shots into the night. Around 11:00 p.m., he then walked up to the steps of his school and shot himself to death.  His stepfather, who had joined in the search for him, found him laying on the steps on his back with the gun on his chest.  The shotgun was licensed to the family for hunting, but it is believed that Adymn sawed off the barrel before leaving his home for the final time.

In one of the more unusual ways for a teenage boy to get attention from a teenage girl, two boys staged a stabbing this morning in one of the school's bathrooms. A 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy believed it would a great attention grabber for the younger boy to stab the older boy and impress the girl.  The two boys went into the bathroom around 7:20 a.m. and the younger boy used a small folding pocket knife to stab his friend in the lower left abdomen.  So far, their plan was going good, until they left the restroom and the wounded boy informed school officials he had been stabbed.   The school went into lockdown and parents rushed to the school to pick up their students as the word spread of a stabbing at Dover High.  There was a lot of panic involved at first, which quickly turned to anger as to why these two boys would stage such a ploy. The younger boy was charged with aggravated assault and sent to the Morris County Juvenile Detention Center. At the time of this news story, the wounded teen had not been charged, but it was speculated that he could be at a later date in time.

During this afternoon's football practice, Clifford Diaz Torres and a friend were making fun of the players.  Clifford walked onto the field at 4:45 p.m. to continue his taunting, but a player told him to leave. The two began to argue and a fight was about to start when a 33-year-old coach intervened to try and defuse the situation. Clifford then verbally threaten the coach, saying, "I'll kill you, you better not call the police. I know your face. I'll come find you. You don't want to mess with Norteños." Norteños is the name of a gang. Clifford, 18, even demanded the coach give him his cell phone. When the coach refused, Clifford pulled a sharpened screwdriver from his pants pocket and tried to stab the coach.  The coach used a pair of shoulder pads to defend himself.  When Clifford saw that his fighting skills were lacking, he and his friend fled the scene, dropping a rum bottle in their wake.  The coach quickly dialed 911 on his cell phone to report the two juvenile delinquents. They were arrested 10 minutes later and charged with attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, resisting a police officer and dissuading a witness.

The fifth act of school violence for today happened in Baltimore with a 16-year-old shooting his classmates.  Earlier this semester Antonio Williamson transferred to Thurgood Marshall High School after being expelled from Lake Clifton / Eastern High School.  His lengthy juvenile record came with him, including an open warrant for running away while being supervised by the state Department of Juvenile Services.  Earlier this week, a friend of Lamar Taylor had been involved in a fight over a girl.  The friend, Lamar and several other students were expelled for the fracas.  Lamar wanted to pickup some of his belongings from the school, so he asked his brother, Terrell Scott, to accompany him. When they arrived at the school courtyard, three young men that Lamar didn't know approached the brothers and asked if he knew a guy named Bobby.  Bobby is Lamar's friend and was involved the fracas earlier this week.  Lamar said, "He's one of my friends." The trio then opened fire, striking Lamar in his hip and Terrell in the leg.  The two brothers fled the scene, but didn't get far.  They collapsed in the median of Moravia Road, where Lamar's girlfriend rushed to his side until the paramedics arrived.  Antonio was arrested and charged with two counts each of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and several handgun offenses.

On Tuesday, November 2, 2004, film-maker Theo van Gogh was shot and stabbed to death in Amsterdam.  Police found a letter on Theo's body signed by an unknown group that threaten to kill politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali for writing the script to Theo's Submission, a very controversial film that criticized the treatment of women under Islam. Over the next six days, mosques in Dutch cities were targeted by vandals and arsonists (who turned out not to be the brightest ones in the bunch as many of their fires failed to cause the desired amount of damage).  Early this morning, those thugs planted a "strong bomb or explosive" at an Islamic school in Eindhoven that detonated at 2:30 a.m.  The blast caused heavy damage as it destroyed doors and windows.  Nobody was in the school at the time of the blast.  Police investigated the bombing for links to Theo's killing.

In first period Spanish class, which starts at 8:00 a.m., the schedule for the day was to watch a video.  During the viewing, James pulled out a machete and a serrated knife and began stabbing his classmates.  He was able to slash five of his fellow students before fleeing the room.  Teachers followed and assistant principal George Gordon caught up to him in the hallway by the gymnasium.  George grabbed James's arm who then turned toward him, raising the knife.  George charged into James and tackled him in the hallway.  A total of eight students, including James, went to the hospital to treat the severe cuts with most of them being released later in the day.  James was taken into custody.  He was charged with six counts of aggravated battery and one count of criminal recklessness.

While we in America were celebrating Thanksgiving, school violence marched on without skipping a beat.  A man broke into the dormitory of the school at 11:45 this evening and stabbed nine boys to death as they slept.  He also wounded four others, two of them seriously.  All of the boys, 16- and 17-years-old, who died were sleeping in the lower bunks and were in at least three separate dormitories. The man escaped and was still at large until his mother reported him to the police when he tried to commit suicide.  Police arrested 21-year-old Yan Yanming on Friday. On Tuesday, January 18, 2005, not even two months after the killings, Yan was executed in Pingdingshan City, in the Henan Province of China.

School violence book ended the Thanksgiving holiday with this stabbing, not all that far from Valparaiso.  A 14-year-old freshman boy had been bullied by a 17-year-old senior, also a boy, for over a month before the younger boy just couldn't take it anymore.  Today, as the two were walking into their reading classes, they exchanged words. The senior reportedly sucker punched the freshman and the young boy pulled out a three-inch pocket knife.  The freshman stabbed the senior in the abdomen. The wounded boy was taken to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields and was in good condition by the next morning.  The young instigator was taken into custody but then later released to his mother.  Police wanted to talk to the bully before brining charges against the freshman.  The freshman had purchased the knife at a flea market at about the same time the bullying began.  Thornton Township High School has about 2,500 students and no metal detectors.

About 9:40 this morning, a fight between two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old boy broke out near the main office on the first floor.  Two of the boys were chasing the third in the hall just before third period when one of the boys (presumably the 16-year-old) suddenly pulled out a knife. He stabbed Edward Brown in his left hand and the other unidentified boy on his right arm.  Both of the wounded 15-year-olds were taken to the hospital and treated.  The 16-year-old boy was arrested.

For the first time in over a month, school violence hits the west coast.  Ironically, in the morning all three of the participants were in a conflict resolution session.  By mid-afternoon, they forgot what they had learned just a few hours earlier.  Around 3:15 this afternoon, on the south side of the school's Walnut Street entrance, a 13-year-old girl had gone to the school to meet a friend.  Another 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl followed her there and the three girls began fighting over a boy.  None of the girls went to school at SCHS.  The fight was actually broken up by a bystander at one point.  But then the 13-year-old girl who had arrived first was stabbed three times in the back with either a broken bottle or knife by the other 13-year-old girl.  The 14-year-old girl struck the younger girl and pulled her hair. The wounded girl staggered to a nearby light post where help arrived.  She was taken to Dominican Hospital for treatment.  The instigators fled the scene and headed toward downtown Santa Cruz.  Police pursued their suspects and arrested them.  The 13-year-old stabber was placed into a group home and sentenced to 250 hours of community service.  The 14-year-old attacker was also sentenced to 250 hours of community service, but was released to her grandmother's care.

After a week of peace in the most populated country in the world, school violence returns with over a dozen injuries.  Around 9:00 this morning, Liu Zhigang scaled the school's fence while carrying a kitchen knife.  He stabbed 12 first-graders and then cut his own throat before being restrained by school staff and police.  The 30-year-old stabbed five boys and seven girls.  Four of the children had serious injuries to their heads, backs and arms. Liu was rushed to the hospital.  Amazingly, police had seen Liu before, in 1994 when he stabbed an undisclosed amount of people during a fight provoked by a mental disease.  It wasn't until five days later that doctors were able to diagnose Liu with schizophrenia and melancholy during the attack.  Because of this condition, Liu can not be held responsible for the injuries.  The children were to be released from the hospital on Thursday, December 9, 2004.

An incendiary device went off tonight sometime between 10:30 and 11 p.m. in a breezeway between the school and a modular addition.  There were two custodians present at the time of the blast who investigated the explosion, but not the breezeway for they had secured it earlier in the night, and found no sign of damage at the school.  However, in the morning another custodian noticed the damaged to the school and called police.  Shattered glass and damaged aluminum soffits abounded, but no structural damage was reported.  School officials sent the incoming children to Lionville Elementary School while the explosion was investigated further.  No body was injured and police do not believe this bomb is linked to the more than 20 bombs found in recent months in the area (Chester and Montgomery Counties).

Riccardo Terzi, a student at Bramalea, backed his car into a parking space at 11:05 this morning.  Just north of his spot, he could see a man crouched down between the vehicles.  The man was 62-year-old Erhun Candir.  Minutes later, Aysegul Candir, a 47-year-old English-as-a-second-language teacher at Bramalea, pulled her Honda into a spot five spaces east of Riccardo's car.  He saw the man run to Aysegul's car and seconds later he heard a gunshot.  He heard a scream and then a second gunshot.  Then in his rear view mirror, he saw Erhun fleeing the scene.  Riccardo gave chase to Erhun, who had rounded the corner of the school.  When he turned the corner, Riccardo saw Erhun get into a 2005 Pontiac Montana minivan and drive away.  He called 911 on his cell phone and went to Aysegul's car.  The door was open and she was laying on the ground with a big puddle of blood underneath her head.  She had been shot in the head and hip.  Erhun killed his wife for an undisclosed reason.  Erhun was arrested at his home.  Police still have not released a motive for this shooting.  On Monday, April 2, 2007, a jury sentenced Erhun to life in prison for killing his wife.  The jury had deliberated for three days before reaching their decision. The murder weapon still has not been found.

When two boys began fighting in school today, school administrators didn't think it would end in a shooting.  After the fight ended, one of the boys, who is seven, went home and got his pellet gun. He returned to the school and started firing as his classmates were leaving the building for recess.  Several students were shot at, including the young instigator's fighting companion.  Teachers were able to put a stop to the shooting and confiscated the rifle.  Police were called the boy was removed from the school. None of the students appeared to have injuries from the pellets and the police said this would have to be resolved by the school officials and social workers.  Canada's Youth Criminal Justice Act doesn't apply to children under 12 and using a pellet gun is not a firearms offense.

After tonight's basketball game, four men ranging in age from 15 to 23, told an NHS student they were making a citizens arrest of him and ordered him out of his truck.  One of the attackers is an named 15-year-old from Spokane while the others are 17-year-old Jerry W. Clark,  19-year-old David Elmer and 23-year-old William Brogdon, none of whom attended the school.  The student  went back into the school and told his friends about what was happening outside.  Soon afterwards, 30 students went into the parking lot to stand up for their classmate.  The four men were quickly outnumbered and Jerry tried to even the fight by drawing a knife and using a broken bottle as a weapon.  Jerry injured two students with the broken bottle and then stabbed two more students.  Authorities were called in and they restored order, sent one of the wounded individuals to Sacred Heart Medical Center for treatment, the other three to Newport Community Hospital for their injuries and arrest the four attackers who had alcohol in their systems.  Charges ranged from rioting, attempted first degree robbery and second degree assault.  At the end of February 2005, Jerry pleaded guilty to two felony counts of second-degree assault.  When he did this, prosecutors charged him as a juvenile and not an adult.  He was sentenced in early March to 30-72 weeks in detention. The length Jerry's detention will be determined by the staff at Martin Hall Juvenile Detention Center and on his behavior.

Oak Ridge Elementary School, Sandwich, Massachusetts

Saturday, January 15, 2005

It's the weekend, and school violence marches on.  Today, Sandwich High School defeated Barnstable High School 88-86 in what was probably a very exciting basketball game.  During the game an adult with ties to Sandwich High made racial slurs to the Barnstable players.  After the game, students from both schools agreed to meet at Oak Ridge to continue the game in a more aggressive manor without the referees.  Oak Ridge Elementary is just down the road from Sandwich High School.  Over a dozen Barnstable students arrived to only half a dozen Sandwich students.  Shortly thereafter, a fight broke out. Sandwich basketball player Matt Payne was struck on the head with a liquor bottle by one Barnstable student.  17-year-old Matt was then stabbed in the chest.  Two more Sandwich students were injured: a female was punched in the face and another boy was stabbed in the arm.  Police arrived and those who could, fled the scene.  Matt was taken to Cape Cod Hospital and in stable condition Sunday night with a punctured lung.  Police were able to charge one of the Barnstable students with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (glass liquor bottle) and another Barnstable student with assault and battery (domestic, indicating a significant other was involved).  Both students are 16-years-old. Police also believe the racial slurs during the game is one of the factors that led to the meeting at Oak Ridge. Eight Barnstable basketball players were suspended for ten days while two Sandwich basketball players were suspended for three days and kicked off the team. A third Sandwich basketball player was also kicked off the team and banned from all school sports for the rest of the year.

Christopher Rhodes dropped off his 7-year-old daughter, Jerica, just after 8 a.m. this morning at this Catholic school in New York.  By 9:30, a school employee found Jerica dead in a school restroom with 16 stab wounds.  Christopher, 27, was grilled by police as they cordoned off the street that he lives on and searched his home.  The police were looking for clothing evidence and apparently Christopher was wearing a jacket when he dropped off Jerica, but was not wearing one when he was picked up hours later in Newburgh, ten miles away. Late in the night Christopher, the son of former village police chief Linwood Rhodes, was brought to the Middletown State Police barracks for further questioning.  One police source said Jerica died from "the most vicious fit of rage" he had ever seen. By the weekend, Christopher was arrested for killing Jerica and charged with second-degree murder.  Christopher believed that Jerica was his daughter, but DNA tests on her body proved he was not.  On Tuesday, November 7, 2005, Christopher was convicted of second-degree murder by an Orange County jury.  On Wednesday, January 11, 2006, almost a year after killing Jerica, Christopher Rhodes was sentenced to 31 years to life in prison by Judge Jeffrey Berry.

Monday, January 31, 2005

Nuran Deeb, 10, went to school early today to play with her schoolmates.  While she was on the playground she was struck dead with a bullet to her head.  The young Palestinian girl suddenly screamed and fell to the ground in a pool of blood.  The other girls at the school began to run for cover and one of them, 7-year-old Aysha Khateeb,  was wounded in the hand.  The Israeli army said that it's troops had not opened fire in that part of Rafah.  They did say that nearby  Palestinians had been celebrating their return from a Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca by shooting guns into the air.  The Palestinian residents deny such a celebration took place.  Hours later, militants from Palestine fired half a dozen mortar shells at Jewish settlements in Gaza.  Nobody was wounded in the retaliation attack. The school is just over 800 meters from an Israeli post on the Gaza-Egypt border. It is in the Brazilian neighborhood of the camp and is run by the United Nations.

This morning as students made their way to homeroom, a fight between two boys broke out.  At one point, Michael Swift, the bigger of the two, had Damion Fincher in a head lock and held the upper hand.  That is, until Damion, 16, began to fight in self defense.  He pulled out a small pocketknife and stabbed Michael five times.  After Michael had released him, Damion ran outside and vomited in an attempt to the rid himself of the sick feeling of what he had just done.  Both boys went to a separate hospital for his injuries.  Police arrest Damion the following Tuesday at his father's home and charged him with aggravated assault.  Police also charged Michael with assault.  On Wednesday, May 18, 2005, Damion pleaded guilty to a juvenile charge of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.  However, if he follows strict conditions set in place for the next year, the charge will drop to a lesser misdemeanor count of reckless conduct.  The strict conditions include: 1) being expelled from Cony High School; 2) must stay out of Kennebec County for a year, unless accompanied by his parents or older sister; 3) have no contact with Michael or any of the students who witnessed the fight and stabbing; and 4) he must live with his father in Bath.

With students in afternoon classes, a 17-year-old boy returns to his elementary school at 3 p.m. today and attacks three teachers.  At the school's gate, the boy asked if a certain teacher was in.  The teacher wasn't there, but the boy entered anyway and came across Mitchiaki Kamozaki, a 52-year-old teacher. Mitchiaki began leading the boy to the teacher's office when the boy pulled out a kitchen knife with 21.5 centimeter blade and plunged it into Mitchiaki's back.  The stab wound reached all the way from Mitchiaki's back to his heart.  He was transported to the hospital where he died.  The teen then went into a teacher's office on the second floor and stabbed 57-year-old Mizue Tomomura, an instructor, and 45-year-old school nutritionist Akemi Fukushima. Both of them are females and were taken to the hospital for their injuries.  Mizue was in serious condition while Akemi wounds were less severe.  The teen then lit a cigarette in the teacher's room and waited for the police to arrive.  They arrived shortly thereafter and arrested him. No students were injured during this attack.

Two boys who were sitting at the back of their school bus today got into a name-calling spat. They were on their way home and one of the boys, 13, stabbed the other boy, 14, in the head, neck and shoulders with a 3-inch pocketknife. The bus driver did not notice the scuffle, but did notice the 14-year-old had blood on his hands as he got off at his normal stop.  He asked the boy if he was okay, but the youth said nothing as he stepped off the bus.  Pocketknives are not allowed  in Anchorage schools, so our young instigator could be facing a weapons charge of some sort.  He is in custody in the McLaughlin Youth Center.

A snowball fight turned violent today in the northern reaches of the British Empire.  A 13-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy were having a snowball fight when, for an undisclosed reason, the older boy started pummeling and kicking the younger boy.  He was kicked so many times, he lost consciousness and was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary around 11:30 this morning.  The older boy was "excluded" from the school while the investigation continues.  Apparently Scotland has stricter rules than we Americans do as the news story stated they could not name the high school for legal reasons.

School violence jumped the pond during the day, all the way to the land of Lincoln.  However, it wasn't reported as an act of school violence until a week later.  Two boys were fighting in one of the school's restrooms when the younger boy, 14, pulled out a folding knife and stabbed his older opponent, who was 15.  The 15-year-old boy went to the superintendent's office around 1:15 p.m. and said he had cut himself on a locker.  He was given first aid and then sent to the hospital for more treatment.  Three hours later, parents started calling the school inquiring about the stabbing.  Word got back to the superintendent and police and they discovered that this was an indeed an isolated act of school violence and not an accident.  The younger boy was suspended for 10-days, arrested and charged with reckless conduct.

Later the same day at a different school in Nazareth, another fight between two boys leads to a stabbing.  This time the weapon was a pen.  The age of the two boys is 11 and 13, however, the story doesn't say which one stabbed the other.  For statistical purposes, I'm going to say the 13-year-old is the stabber and the 11-year-old is the stabbee. Once again, the stab wound was minor.

The fourth act of school violence for today claims the life of a school bus driver.  This morning at about the halfway point of her route, Joyce Gregory stopped the bus, No. 22, to pickup 14-year-old Jason Clinard, a boy she had kicked off earlier for using smokeless tobacco.  Jason extracted his revenge at 6:15 this morning when he pulled out a .45-caliber handgun and murdered Joyce, a 47-year-old mother of two daughters.  Several bullets tore through her torso and one severed her aorta. This was her second year as a bus driver.  The 24 students on the bus had an age range of 5 to 17 and were headed to classes at Dover Elementary School and Stewart County High School.  Because of Jason's age, I'm classifying this as a high school act of violence, even though it happened off campus.  On Tuesday, August 2, 2005, Stewart County Juvenile Court Judge Andy Brigham ruled that Jason would be tried as an adult.

Wednesday, March 9, 2005

At the end of lunch today at 11:45 a.m., heated words were exchanged between two eighth-grade boys.  One of the boys had asked the other if he could borrow some money and things escalated from there.  As they walked down the hall to their next class, one of them pulled out a pocket knife and a pen knife.  He then attack his classmate.  Two other students joined in on the fight. All four of them were injured.  Teacher's quickly broke up the fight and restored order.  A fifth student who was not injured, nor apart of the fight, picked up one of the fallen knives and hid it.  However, police were still able to apprehend him and recover the knife. The Bluffton Police Department said they would charge all five students.  One of the boys who started the fight was in handcuffs by 12:20 p.m. and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, possession of a weapon on school property and disturbing schools.  Just ten minutes later his opponent was wheeled out on a stretcher face down with his classmates from a nearby room cheering.  The wounded boy was transported to the hospital, but was released by the end of the day.  He was charged with assault and battery and disturbing schools. Another ten minutes past and a third boy was removed from the school, this time in a wheelchair and in great pain.  He was placed in the squad car with the first boy.  The fourth boy came out shortly thereafter with his hands bandaged and cuffed.  He joined the other two boys in the squad car.  The squad card took the trio to Coastal Carolina Medical Center for treatment before beginning their processing into the juvenile system.  The two boys who joined the fight in progress were charged with assault and battery and disturbing schools.  Police charged the fifth boy with accessory in connection with concealing one of the knives.

Today's third round of school violence happened in Nashville when 19-year-old Scott Edward Gray III  was shot while waiting to pick up his younger sister from Maplewood High this afternoon.  Scott arrived around 2:00 and asked student Ashley Sullivan how to get into the school.  She said the doors were unlocked and that he needed to beware of the school guards.  He entered the school and a staff member noticed him.  Since he had bypassed procedures, he was asked to leave.  He did so, going across the street to the school's parking lot.  Here, he began to argue with three to six other individuals.  One of them was 16-year-old Tyree Pierre Gray, no relation.  The argument climaxed when Tyree pulled out a pistol and a brief struggle ensued.  The young Tyree was able to disengage himself long enough to step back and shoot Scott in the chest.   Tyree then fled in a black Pontiac Grand Prix or Grand Am with tinted windows.  Scott was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and listed in critical condition.  Last year, Tyree was expelled from Maplewood and was attending Cohn Alternative Learning Center.  In January, school officials kicked him out from assault and disruptive behavior.

This morning at 9 a.m., 7-year-old second-grader Farland Dindy pulled out a Hi-Point .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol from his backpack and showed it to one of his classmates.  The classmate didn't want anything to do with the gun.  So, our young gun totter, put the pistol back in his backpack and it went off.  The bullet went through Farland's hand and he was transported to Columbus's Children's Hospital for treatment.  With the layout of the school being what it is, school officials decided to go ahead as planned with the standardized tests scheduled for today for the fourth-graders who were in a different wing. Police said the pistol did not come from Farland's parents, and they began a search to figure out how a 7-year-old boy got his hands on a .45-caliber pistol.  Farland said he found it on his way to school.  Police traced the gun and found it had been sold to a Dublin resident in 1996 from a Reynoldsburg gun shop.  The owner then sold the gun in 2003 to the Ohio State Pawnshop in Whitehall. In October of that same year, 24-year-old Quinzell J. Mack purchased the gun.  Today, his brother Farland found it hidden underneath their sofa and took it to school with him. Police charged Quinzell with negligent assault, a third-degree misdemeanor.

Also today, Mrs. Ottersbach had her class performing a math exercise by counting jelly beans when one little girl started acting silly.  Mrs. Ottersbach decided to take the jelly beans away from the 5-year-old girl.  The young girl retaliated by terrorizing the classroom, Room 13.  She trashed Mrs. Ottersbach's desk, smashed a candy dish and kicked another teacher in the shins.  The girl was taken to the principal's office where she continued her rant.  She threw books and boxes, climbed atop the desk and started stomping on it.  From there, she grabbed a pen, jumped down and began drawing on the walls.  The assistant principal began calling the district's campus police when the girl punched her in the stomach.  The assistant principal asked the school's secretary to call for help and she called the city police.  They arrived and arrested the unruly girl.  The police bound her hands with wrist ties and put her in the back of their car.  The little girl was still defiant and began kicking the back of the front seat.  So... a police officer put handcuffs on her ankles.  The state attorney's office did not file any charges against the unruly girl and she went home with her mother. Police said their actions were proper.  If you read the whole news story, I believe you will agree with me that this is a perfect example of very bad parenting skills.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Edwardsville, Illinois

Tuesday, March 15, 2005

After the Super Sectional basketball game between Carbondale Community High School and Alton High School, the fans left the Sam Vadalabene Center on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.  This was a Class AA playoff game with Carbondale winning 64-60.   In the parking, just before 10:00, Alton High School student Tommy Taylor, 17, was stabbed by a young man believed to be a student at CCHS.  The instigator then fled the parking lot into the woods along the campus.  Tommy was first taken to Anderson Hospital in Maryville and later transported via air to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment of his punctured lung.

Carrick High School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Wednesday, March 16, 2005

An ongoing feud between students from Beltzhoover and Saint Clair Village led to a student being killed this afternoon behind Carrick High School.  Keith Watts, 16, was in the driver's seat of a blue Chevrolet Geo Tracker with two of his friends when two men in a teal green Hyundai Sonata pulled up along side them.  Words were exchanged between the two vehicles when one of the Sonata occupants pulled out an AK-47 assault rifle and opened fire on the trio in the Tracker.  At least eight shots were fired, one striking Keith in the head and another in his torso.  He died at 1:58 p.m.  17-year-old Alfred Grimmitt was in the passenger seat of the Tracker and was shot in the arm and torso.  He was taken to Mercy Hospital and listed in critical condition. The third student in the Tracker was 16-year-old Raymont Dillard.  He received minor wounds from flying broken glass. Police found the Sonata on Wednesday in Beltzhoover.  In 1999, Keith's father was murdered in Beltzhoover and in 2001, his mother was also killed violently in the Hill District.  Derwin Milligan, 17, a junior at Langley High School, was taken into custody on Friday and charged with homicide.  Police were still searching for the other man in the Sonata on Saturday.  In September police dropped charges against Derwin Milligan after evidence proved he was not at the scene.  However, police weren't discouraged as they arrested 21-year-old Howard Kelly and 19-year-old Jheri Matthews on Thursday, September 29, 2005.  The next morning, police arrested 22-year-old Shawn Wilmer in connection with Keith's murder.  All three men were charged with criminal homicide and criminal conspiracy.  During a preliminary hearing for Howard, Jheri and Shawn, a witness said that Keith was shot because he shot Jheri back in June 2004.  The witness, 21-year-old Nathan Walters, also said that Howard and Shawn bragged about the shooting.

Colchester High School, Colchester, Vermont

Wednesday, March 16, 2005

Also today, a ninth-grade male student fired a BB gun at another student in the school's restroom.  The BB gun fired rubber-like pellets and hit the male student in the arm.  The impact of the BB's didn't penetrate the skin, but did cause a welt to form on the boy's arm.  A BB gun is not considered a firearm and so bringing it to school is not against the law.  However, shooting someone with a BB gun could be considered an assault.  The news story didn't release names, but said the instigator is the son of a school board member.  This caused concern for parents as they believed the boy would get special treatment.  The superintendent said the board will follow their punishment policy.

Wednesday, March 16, 2005

This evening, another fight at a basketball game lead to a stabbing, this time in the suburbs of Toronto.  About 100 fans were in the stands around 8:00 when the fight broke out.  A 20-year-old man was slashed across the face and a 19-year-old man was stabbed in the ribs.  They were transported to the hospital and police arrested another 20-year-old male.  The administration at Father Henry Carr West Secondary School contacted me at the beginning of June 2006 and provided me with more information about this act of school violence.  Apparently, they rented the gym to a community organization who put together the basketball game with players who did not attend the school.  No students, teachers or staff at FHCWSS participated in the basketball game, or were injured from the knife-wielding assailant, as this was their week of spring break.  The gym is located at what Principal Vincent Burzotta called the school's satellite campus.  So even though no students of FHCWSS were injured or perpetrated this act of school violence, it still took place on property owned by the school, which, in turn, falls under my definition of "school violence."  That is why the entry is here on my list.

This morning around 9:30 28-year-old Sadia Abdurahman dropped off her five-year-old son and was heading back to her BMW in the school's car-park when she saw a man jump up suddenly.  She turned and ran back to the school building, to a passageway where students leave their backpacks.  The man, her ex-husband, 28-year-old Ahmed Ibrahim from Somalia, stabbed her six times in the neck and shoulder.  School officials gave her first aid before she was transported to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where she stayed over night.  Police arrested Ahmed about 30 minutes later and recovered the knife.  He was charged with attempted murder, intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing injury, unlawful assault (as opposed to a lawful assault), intentionally damaging property, assault with a weapon and breaking an intervention order.

O. Perry Walker High School, Algiers, Louisiana

Thursday, March 17, 2005

This afternoon at 2 p.m. gunshots tore through students as they were heading back to class from lunch.  Students believe this shooting is linked to the melee (between teens from the Cutoff neighborhood and those from Algiers) at the school on Tuesday when 20 students were arrested.  One student who was not identified said he saw another male student with a handgun yesterday as he showed it off briefly to others.  Getting back to the shooting now:  Two male students brought guns to O. Perry Walker High School today. 15-year-old Jernell Hankton brought his parent's .38-caliber handgun to school while 17-year-old Gerald Thornton, from Algiers, brought a BB gun that resembles a more powerful handgun.  Jernell was walking with his friends in a second-floor hallway when the mini turf war erupted.   Jernell's friends include Chase McNeal, 15; Charles Montegut and Kadeem Wise, both 16; and Derrick Hutton, 17; all from the Cutoff neighborhood.  Jernell and his friends passed the .38-caliber handgun between themselves several times while Gerald maintained possession of his BB gun.  He pointed the BB gun at several students, but didn't fire it.  However, the .38-caliber handgun was fired five times. One of the bullets struck sophomore football player Prentiss Bovia in the lower right leg.  He was taken to Charity Hospital for treatment.  Jernell took his parent's gun back home.  On Tuesday, March 22, 2005, Chase and Jernell turned themselves into police.  When police searched Jernell's home, they found the gun.  Prentiss would not cooperate with the police, so his classmates couldn't be charged with more than felony possession of a gun on school grounds and aggravated assault.  Kadeem and Jernell had separate trials in front of Juvenile Court Judge David Bell in June 2005.  He found them guilty of illegally carrying a weapon on school grounds.  Later on that same day, Chase, Charles, Derrick and Gerald pleaded guilty.  All six boys were sentenced to one year in juvenile prison, however Judge Bell suspended various amounts of each sentence. Kadeem had 60 days of sentence suspended; Jernell had 30 days suspended; Chase had 45 days suspended while Charles and Derrick had 90 days suspended.  Gerald was charged with five counts of aggravated assault and illegally carrying a weapon on school grounds.  He was sentenced to one year in juvenile prison with 90 days suspended.  For statistical purposes, since the gun was owned by Jernell's family, I'm counting him as the instigator. This was not Walker High's first act of school violence.  In 1992, a 15-year-old student was shot in the head in a breezeway on campus, he later died.

Red Lake Senior High School, Red Lake, Minnesota

Monday, March 21, 2005

Nine straight days of school violence wrapped up in Minnesota today with the nation's worst school shooting since the Columbine massacre. Jeff Weise usually wore black and was considered a loner by his classmates.  Seven years ago his father committed suicide.  His mother survived a March 1999 car wreck with brain injuries and has been living ever since in a nursing home in Minneapolis, 240 miles away.  This left Jeff in the care of his grandmother.  Jeff was in the school's Homebound program for violating an unnamed policy.  He was not permitted to attend class with his peers. A traveling teacher would visit him, and others in the program, during the day to educate him.  His grandfather, Daryl "Dash" Lussier, and his girlfriend, Michelle Sigana, lived nearby in a secluded house.   Daryl has been a  member of the Red Lake Police Department for 30 years and held the rank of sergeant.  Today, Jeff went to the home of his grandfather with a .22-caliber handgun and shot Daryl and Michelle, fatally wounding them.  He donned his grandfather's bullet-proof vest and police-issued gun belt, grabbed a12-guage shotgun and a .40-caliber pistol (Daryl's service weapons).  He drove to the school in Daryl's squad car and drove right up to the door.  He arrived at the school around 2:50 p.m.  Red Lake High School has metal detectors, cameras and security guards, none of which stopped Jeff.  As he stepped out of the car, the wind caught his black trench coat, revealing the three guns to the security guards.  At the door were Derrick Brun and Leann Grant, unarmed security guards who worked at the school.  Jeff confronted Derrick while Leann headed down the hall moving the students out of the way.  She called for Derrick to follow her, to help get the students to safety, but Derrick stood his ground.  Jeff killed Derrick and then walked down the hallway with the guns a blazing.  Students and teachers were in the hallway and they sought refuge in a classroom.  Jeff followed them into the room.  He killed teacher Neva Rogers and sprayed the students with bullets, killing five of his classmates.  Student Reggie Graves heard the shooting as his class was watching a movie about Shakespeare.  Reggie heard Jeff enter another classroom and ask his friend Ryan if he believed in God.  Jeff then shot Ryan.  Jeff was smiling and waving to his classmates as he shot them.  Students in other classrooms could hear the gunfire getting closer as Jeff made his way down the hall. A janitor warned one classroom that someone was shooting and told the students to stay in the classroom.  The students moved into an adjacent office and held the door shut.  Jeff fired at the door, but the bullets didn't go through.  Justin Jourdain, a student and school superintendent Stuart Desjarlait were holding the door closed.  With his other hand, Stuart called the police on Justin's cell phone.  For 25 minutes, the students stayed huddled and scared inside that office.  Jeff moved on and tried to break into Diane Schwanz's Native Culture Room, but he failed to gain entry.  Diane was able to call the police on her cell phone as Jeff was trying to break in.  Student Ashley Morrison was also in the Native Culture Room, she called her mother on her cell phone who could hear the gunshots over the phone.  One girl was heard pleading with Jeff, saying, "No, Jeff, quit, quit.  Leave me alone.  What are you doing?"  Four tribal police officers arrived within two minutes of the first 911 call.  They rushed into the school and fired upon our young instigator.  He returned fire and was wounded in the hip and leg.  Jeff then retreated to the first classroom and ended the rampage by killing himself.  He picked up the shotgun, put it to his chin and fired the last shot.  All of this in just over 10 minutes.  By 4:22 p.m. the first of the seven wounded students arrived at a hospital for treatment.  Five of the injuries were head injuries, while the remaining two students were only grazed by the bullets.  The wounded were taken to Red Lake Hospital and North Country Regional Hospital  in the nearby town of Bemidji.  Steven Cobenais and Jeffrey May were flown to MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota, for their head wounds.  Thursday evening, Greg Zanis (the Illinois carpenter who put up 15 crosses in Clement Park in Littleton after the Columbine massacre), put up nine crosses in front of the high school. Just like the folks of Littleton did almost six years ago, the entire community of Red Lake turned out for the funerals that began over the weekend.  Letters, cards, balloons and sympathy poured in from around the nation, and the world, just like Littleton.  On Easter Sunday, March 27, 16-year-old Louis Jourdain was arrested in connection to this school shooting.  The following day he was charged with conspiracy in a Duluth federal courtroom.  Louis is the son of the tribe's chairman, Floyd Jourdain Jr.  Officials said that Louis plotted the attack with Jeff.  On Monday, August 29, 2005, U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank ruled that Louis would be tried as a juvenile. This school shooting happened on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, home to the Red Lake Chippewa Tribe, one of the poorest in the state.  Just over 5,100 people live on the reservation with all but 91 being Indians.  Students returned to classes at Red Lake Senior High on Tuesday, April 12.  On Tuesday, November 29, 2005, Louis pleaded guilty to threatening interstate communications.  Authorities had dropped the charges of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States.  In pleading guilty, Louis used a computer to conduct interstate communications that "could be taken by an objective observer as threatening."  On Friday, January 13, 2006, Louis Jourdain was sentenced in juvenile court for making threats by way of interstate communications.  The terms of the sentence were not released as the case was heard in juvenile court.

Wednesday, March 23, 2005

A call to 911 was placed at 2:04 p.m. today saying there was a man wearing sweat pants and a fanny pack carrying a gun on Fifth Street.  Police officers made their way to Fifth Street and our suspect, 51-year-old Joseph W. Stank, noticed them coming toward him.  He pocketed the gun and entered Indiana Area Senior High School's main office building and asked for a job application. The secretary's directed him to Central Administration so that he could pick up an application.  He wasn't too happy about that, but he left the building peacefully.  As he left the building, he pulled out the gun again. On the sidewalk, Joseph was confronted by a Indiana Borough Detective Scott Schuller.  Scott told Joseph to drop the gun, but he refused.  Scott then fired two shots from his 12-guage shotgun, striking Joseph in the neck and chest.  He was rushed to Indiana Regional Medical Center where he died.  After the shooting, Scott inspected the gun that Joseph had and discovered it to be an air pistol.  Police said that Joseph has a history with local police and mental health officials.  The county coroner said that Joseph also had a record of drug and alcohol abuse and mental instability. The district attorney said that Scott acted properly and would not file charges.

Cayuga Community College, Auburn, New York

Thursday, March 31, 2005

Bradley Laning and Andrea Kell, both 17, met up at Cayuga Community College late this afternoon to discuss problems in their relationship.  The college campus was closed for spring break so the troubled couple had free reign of the school's walking trails.  The conversation must have gone very bad as Bradley pulled out a kitchen knife and stabbed Andrea in the abdomen.  Unlike other recent stabbers, Bradley stayed with Andrea as she lay on the ground, slowly bleeding to death.  Another male walking down the trail noticed Bradley kneeling over Andrea and the pool of blood Andrea was lying in.  He returned home and called 911 at 4:09 p.m.  Police rushed to the scene, but by the time they arrived, Andrea had died.  Bradley turned himself into police at 5:20 and admitted he killed Andrea.  He was arraigned and held without bail.  Andrea attended classes at Weedsport High School where she was a junior.  Bradley was a former student of WHS.  And so ends the incredibly violent of month of March 2005.  There were 23 school days this month, 18 if you factor in spring break.  In those 23 (18) days, I found 43 acts of school violence.  You do the math, we're loosing the battle of keeping our children safe in their schools.

Also this morning, in a bizarre turn of events, a teacher attacked another teacher in a classroom filled with students.  Several students were milling about the lockers when seventh-grade science teacher Mary Oliver told them to go to class.  One of the students in the group was in the eighth-grade and her mother is a teacher at North Dallas High School .  The girl was rather upset and went to the counselor's office, where they called her mother, 45-year-old Paulette Baines.  Paulette arrived and confronted Mary in her third-period classroom, yelling at her as she crossed the room.  Mary tried to persuade Paulette to move the conversation outside into the hall, but Paulette kept coming at her.  Paulette grabbed Mary's hair, pulled her out of her chair and dragged her across the floor.  Paulette punched Mary in the face several times and kicked her repeatedly.  Several students pulled Paulette off of Mary while other students went to get the school's resource officer.  Mary, 45, suffered bruises to her face, a concussion and two broken ribs. Paulette was charged with assault with bodily injury and bonded out of jail the next day.  On Wednesday, May 10, 2006, Paulette was convicted of assaulting a public servant.

Principal Jacqueline Mahatha saw 16-year-old Jerome Brown on campus when he should have been in class.  She demanded that he head for class.  He laughed, assured her would and then promptly began walking off the campus with a friend. They almost made it to the school's perimeter on North Dorgenois and Andry when three vehicles approached them.  Terrence Petit, 20, Jovan Wesby, 28 and Melvin Gasper, 43, quickly exited the vehicles and surrounded the teens, flashing their guns.  Terrence ordered the two boys on to their knees and wanted them to tell him where his stolen vehicle was.  Jerome told them he didn't know anything about the stolen vehicle.  Terrence then shot him in the neck and his friend fled to the school.  Jerome was rushed to the hospital and treated for the gunshot wound, which paralyzed him.  Police were able to apprehend Terrence and Jovan, but Melvin is still at large.  On Thursday, Commissioner Joseph Giarrusso set Terrence's bail at $525,000 and charged him with attempted second-degree murder.  A week later at a hearing, he reduced the bail to $175,000 over the prosecutor's objections.  Jovan was arrested April 21, 2005 and charged with being a principal to attempted second-degree murder.  Two weeks later, Criminal Court Judge Charles Elloie reduced the bail even further by $25,000 and told Terrence to stay away from Jerome.  Judge Elloie also imposed a midnight to 1 p.m. curfew on Terrence, this allows him to continue to work at a restaurant to support his family.

I usually don't report on fights, unless, of course, they lead to an injury by a weapon, but every once in a while, a fight all by itself is worthy to be called an act of school violence.  This morning at 8 a.m., Assistant Principal Ruth Billingsley was meeting with four students in her office.  Her door was open and the sounds of chase began to filter in through the open doorway.  Running down the hall were students and an adult who is reported to have been a mother of one of the students. Her secretary called them all into Ruth's office for safety.  Once inside, Ruth looked through the door as a female student picked up a chair and threw it through door, right into Ruth.  She collapsed to the floor and was treated with an ice pack until an ambulance could take her to South Pointe Hospital for more extensive treatment.  While Ruth lay on the floor of her office, the chase moved to the other side of the building and climaxed in a fight.  A 17-year-old female student was injured during the fight and also transported to the hospital for treatment.  No arrests were immediately made.

Around 7:20 this morning, Bryant Oneal Evans stabbed Damaceo Bullock in his right thigh as the two boys rode school bus 172 to Southern Vance High School.  The bus driver, Hazel Hargrove, turned the bus around and dropped Damaceo and his 14-year-old brother off near his home, without telling her supervisors, even though she had a district issued cell phone for times like this.  She said Damaceo, who is developmentally disabled, was asking for his mother.  She then continued on the rest of the route.  This violates school policy and she was suspended.  Damaceo and his brother exited the bus at their normal stopped and walked a quarter-mile to their home.  His mother contacted authorities and he went to the hospital to have his leg stitched up. Bryant was arrested and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon.  Both of the boys are 18.

Guru Angad Dev High School, Kot Mangal Singh, Ludhiana, Punjab, India

Friday, April 15, 2005

Satnam Singh, a Class XII student at the school, was having very friendly relations with one of his teachers.  The school's principal, Sukhpal Singh (no relation), even witnessed the May-December couple exchanging letters.  He pulled Satnam aside and threatened to expose the relationship and then he beat up the boy.  Satnam was able to return home under his own power.  However, his school clothes had been torn to pieces.  He told his uncle, Balbir Singh, that the principal had beaten him up for not wearing the school's uniform.  His family went to Guru Angad Dev to meet with the principal and while they were gone, Satnam filled his stomach with poison.  Police began to raid the town, looking for Sukhpal.  His family returned and saw what Satnam had done to himself.  He was rushed to CMCH where he died.  His family didn't take this tragic turn of events to well as after Satnam had died, they returned to the school and set it on fire. They burnt the school record, broke windows and furniture and brought the building down to ash.  Satnam was cremated on Saturday evening.  On Sunday, April 17, 2005, Sukhpal surrendered to the police at the Shimlapuri police station. So all in all, we have the beating of a student by the principal, the student's suicide and the burning of the school by the student's family.  What a terrible weekend.

The six-year anniversary of the Columbine massacre almost passed without incident.  Late this evening, 17-year-old Jamie Pelletier was driving around town with her ex-boyfriend when 18-year-old Jennifer Orangio spotted them.  Jennifer is now dating Jamie's ex.  She followed the former couple and Jamie pulled into Marlborough High School's parking lot to confront Jennifer.  Both girls, who had recently dropped out of MHS, got out of their cars and began arguing.  The exchange of words turned into a fight when they started pushing each other.  During this portion of the fight, Jamie picked up a full glass bottle of Twisted Tea, threatening to smash it over Jennifer's head.  Jennifer challenged her, yelling, "Go ahead, do it!"  So... Jamie smashed the tea bottle on top of Jennifer's head and then jammed the broken bottle into her face repeatedly.  The authorities were called and they found Jennifer unconscious lying in a pool of her own blood in the school's parking lot.  She had deep facial lacerations with blood shooting out up to eight inches away from one of the cuts on her lip. Jennifer was taken to a local hospital for treatment and Jamie was arrested and charged with mayhem and assault and battery with a deadly weapon. She pleaded not guilty to the felony charge of assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

Julian Thomas Elementary School, Racine, Wisconsin

Thursday, April 21, 2005

Yesterday, three bullies beat up an 8-year-old boy. The boy was scared and wanted to protect himself the next day.  Just before school began today, Racine police received a call from Julian Thomas Elementary School reporting their principal had been assaulted by a student. The call came in about 8:30 a.m. and police went to the school.  They found Principal Angela Ress Apmann "somewhat responsive" after being struck several times by a 28-inch long, 1 1/2-inch thick wooden pole that was wielded by the 8-year-old boy.  Principal Apmann saw the boy carrying the pole onto the campus and went to him to take the pole away.  He began to swing the pole and pummeled her until other staff members were able to subdue him.  Police recovered the pole, which was now broken in three places.  Principal Apmann was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center where she was treated for multiple lacerations to her upper body and head.  The young instigator was released to his mother.  She took a nap and the boy went back to school to play with his friends on the playground. On Friday the boy was restless in juvenile court as he charged with two counts of battery.  Court Commissioner Georgia Herrera removed the boy from his mother's custody after learning the boy's return to the school.

This morning a 15-year-old male student brought what he believed to be a cigarette lighter to school.  It was actually a .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun he had gotten from a 14-year-old fellow male classmate. He kept it in his pocket and when he put his hand into his pocket during math class around 10 a.m. the gun went off.  All of the students fled the room.  The boy threw the gun into a drain and then told school administrators where to find the weapon.  The 14-year-old boy said he found the gun this morning before coming to school.  However, it wasn't clear exactly where that was. The two boys were taken to the juvenile correction center in LaPlace and charged with illegal possession of a concealed weapon.  The older boy was also charged with illegal discharge of a weapon.

Two days later, Thembi went to the Moroka police station to turn himself in.  Instead, he shot a journalist in the arm who was interviewing him and then committed suicide.

Around 12:30 this afternoon, near the end of freshman lunch, an argument began between two 15-year-old females was subdued when the school's guards directed the two females to go to the office.  One of the young girls called her older sisters, 17 and 20, and her 42-year-old mother to come to the school to talk to the principal.  They arrived and chatted with the principal.  When they left, they spotted the other 15-year-old girl in the hallway and attacked her.  The 17-year-old sister was flanked by her sister and mother as she used a razor blade to slash the 15-year-old's neck.  The fight drew a crowd and some of them, up to eight, joined in, whether to stop the fight or incite a riot, it is not known.  The school's guards regained order in about three minutes and paramedics led the injured 15-year-old girl away for treatment.  Police arrested the sisters and mother who had come to their sibling's / daughter's call.  Sure would have been easier to type this up (and a lot easier to understand) if the newspaper had listed the names of all those girls, don't you think?

Also today, two 12-year-old boys carried out what they believed to a big joke.  The joke involved sticking several of their classmates with used Lancet needles and saying, "Now you have AIDS."  Lancet needles are used by diabetics to test their blood sugar.  They are a solid needle and not hollow like the syringe.  The boys pricked 30 students with the needles before being turned over to the police.  All of the students who were pricked were tested for HIV and Hepatitis B as a precautionary measure.  The next day, police arrested four more students in connection with the two boys.  All of the detained students were sent to the juvenile detention center in San Benito and face aggravated assault charges.

An international act of school violence wraps up the day.  This afternoon during the school's sports day at the M. C. C. Grounds, a ruckus between two boys climaxed when one of them stabbed the other.  The fight began around 3:30 between Clinton Gill, 13, and an unnamed 12-year-old boy.  Apparently, one of the younger boy's friends took a wheel off of his bicycle.  The younger boy thought it was Clinton who absconded with his wheel.  He confronted him and even though Clinton told the younger boy he didn't take the wheel, the younger boy punched him in the mouth, pulled out a wooden-handled ice pick and stabbed Clinton in the left side of his back. Clinton was transported to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where doctor's discovered Clinton's lung had been punctured.  Police responded quickly to the ruckus and were able to apprehend the young stabber.

An earlier fight between a 15-year-old girl and 18-year-old Princess Starasia McAllister led to a second, more physical fight between the two females.  The second fight started in a third-floor stairwell around 11:45 a.m. when the younger girl bumped into Princess and did not apologize.  The girls fought in the stairwell briefly before the younger girl pulled out a serrated knife and tried to slash Princess on the head.  Princess fled down the stairs into the attendance office on the first floor.  The young girl was in hot pursuit and when she caught up to her in the office, she stabbed Princess.  The wounded girl fled the office, but collapsed in the hallway where the younger girl stabbed her three more times.  Student Melvin Bunche, 16, got a little too close to the scene and had one of his fingers nicked by the knife.  A school aide was able to wrestle the knife from the enraged young stabber and bring the violence to an end.  The four stab wounds were to Princess's head and back.  The fight over, and her weapon taken away, the young stabber fled the Brooklyn school.  Princess was transported to Kings County Hospital and listed in stable condition.  The next day, police had the young stabber in custody. The school has 550 students and no metal detectors.

Heavy rains soaked Kingston today and that means one thing, robbers come out along Maxfield Avenue to exploit the bad road conditions.  This afternoon a bus full of students was heading down Maxfield Avenue when a group of heavily armed men approached the bus.  All of them had handguns and they tried to open the door.  When they failed at that, they opened fire on the bus.  The bus driver, Anthony Gordon, shifted to reverse and backed out of the area.  As he fled, the gunmen riddled the bus with bullets: five windows were shattered, seven bullets pierced the windshield, three bullets were lodged in the dashboard and several bullets ripped through the side of the bus.  Amazingly, none of the bullets hit any of the students or Anthony.  All of the students are from Portmore, St. Catherine, Jamaica.  Police began a manhunt for the gunmen.

Yesterday, two seventh-grader band members were arguing over the Internet.  At one computer sat a 12-year-old boy and at the other computer sat a 12-year-old girl.  The young girl apologized to the boy for the argument, but he didn't accept her apology.  In her diary she wrote that she wanted to get revenge.  Around 8:00 in the evening, she e-mailed the boy and asked him to meet her tomorrow morning outside the school before classes began.  She then took a kitchen steak knife with a  4- to 5-inch blade from the dishwasher, placed it and a poem about revenge in a shoebox and wrapped a ribbon around the box, as though it was a gift to the boy.  Today, the young girl arrived at school looking for the boy, but he didn't meet her.  She began to wander around the school and found him working on a computer in a French classroom.  She asked a friend to get him to come out of the classroom so that the two could talk.  During the talk she was going to lead him to a stairway where she was going to stab him with the knife.  However, the boy would not leave the classroom.  So, she entered the room, pulled the knife from the box and buried it (all the way to the handle) into the boy's lower back.  She fled the room but later turned herself in at the school's office.  The boy was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights where he was treated for a collapsed lung.  The knife was between his third and fourth ribs and he is expected to make a full recovery. The school went into lockdown and the police were called just after 7:30 a.m.  The girl was taken into custody and charged with attempted first-degree murder on Monday, May 16, 2005, in Associate Circuit Judge Sarah Lessman's courtroom at the Depke Juvenile Justice Complex and Hulse Detention Center in Vernon Hills.  On Thursday, June 23, 2005, she pleaded guilty to a charge of armed violence in a deal worked out with her lawyers and the court.  On Wednesday, August 24, 2005, the young girl was sentenced to five years probation, can only leave her house for psychiatric treatment or school, must perform 500 hours of community service and is prohibited from using the Internet, a cell phone or any other device capable of sending a text message.

Saturday, May 14, 2005

This evening a group of Berkner students had an unpleasant run-in with a group of teens from Rowlett at the Skate Zone on Centennial Drive.  Just before 6:30 this evening, Rowlett Police received a 911 call stating that 20 people were gathering at the Skate Zone for a fight.  By the time police had arrived, the crowd had dispersed peacefully.  But that is not the end of the story.  About three hours later, plans were in the works to finish the fight in Berkner's parking lot, a place the teens usually hang out at.  The Rowlett teens arrived in about six cars and the Berkner students were ready for them.  A single punch was thrown and then bullets started flying when one of the teens pulled out a 9mm handgun.  One of the bullets struck Ryan Hammonds in the abdomen.  Ryan is part of the Berkner student's group.  Other bullets hit the school and one of the vehicles.  Ryan was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound.  Richardson police arrested 17-year-old Timothy Wayne Fouse on Sunday afternoon in connection with this shooting.

While driving the students home on his bus route, 66-year-old Albert M. Taylor repeatedly asked Corey Gene Hendershot, 13, to put on his seat belt.  When Corey refused, Albert asked him to come to the front of the bus.  Corey still refused to listen to Albert's instructions.  Albert stopped the bus, walked to the rear of the bus with the intent of dragging Corey to the front.  As Albert approached Corey, his stepbrother, Mark Ernest Dickinson, 15, jumped into the aisle and cursed at Albert saying, "Hey, mother f-----!" Albert spun around and slapped Mark in the face and grabbed his throat.  He let the boy go, returned to the driver's seat and called for a county deputy to come to the bus.  He got up and went back toward Corey. Mark was right there in the aisle and the boy pushed Albert in the chest and hit him in the face.  Corey then punched Albert in the side.  When the sheriff's deputies arrived, they arrested Albert on charges of simple battery, and arrested the brothers on charges of felony assault or battery on specified officials or employees. The entire fight was caught on a surveillance camera and the clip circulated across the Internet.  Prosecutors dropped all charges against Corey and Mark two weeks later.  Prosecutors said they "cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that either of the boys violated a criminal law.  While the actions of Corey and Mark were disrespectful, rude and profane, their behavior needs to be addressed by their parents and the school district."  However, charges against Albert are proceeding.

Siem Reap International (Elementary) School, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Thursday, June 16, 2005

Siem Reap is a town known by tourists as the home the 800-year-old temple of Angkor Wat, one of the world's man-made wonders, in north west Cambodia.  Now it is also known as a town where school violence has come.  A South Korean man hired 23-year-old Chea Sokhom, a Cambodian man, to drive his children to and from the international school.  Recently, the South Korean man got angry at Chea and slapped him across the face.  Chea quit the job and returned to his hometown in the province of Kandal where he began plotting his revenge.  He came up with the idea of going into the school with a gun and killing the two South Korean children that he used to drive.  Chea purchased a handgun and got three of his buddies to help him out.  The four masked men, armed with the handgun and knives, stormed the school at 9:30 this morning and seized two kindergarten classes.  Apparently, holding 70 school kids hostage was too much for the four gunmen and they decided to release one whole class and hold the remaining 30 pupils and staff.  The children, ranging in age from 2 to 6, come from Australia, Cambodia, Canada, Great Britain, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, the United States, Taiwan and Thailand.  They were unable to find the South Korean children and now they had 30 kids and a teacher to deal with.  One of the children being held hostage was two-year-old Maxim Michalik from Canada.  The young boy was crying loudly and Chea, our revenge-seeking ringleader, silenced him with a bullet to his head.  The gunmen demanded six AK-47 assault rifles, six shotguns, two B-40 rockets, hand grenades, $30,000 and a car with a dozen seats to take them to Thailand.  They threatened to kill the children one by one if their demands weren't met.  Officials came up with a van and the $30,000, but didn't give the gunmen any more weapons.  The four gunmen allowed the police to bring the van into the school's complex. However, as the four gunmen tried to load up the van with themselves and children, the police decided it was time to take more aggressive steps to end the siege.  Two dozen police officers armed for combat stormed the school at that point.  By now, it was around 3:30 in the afternoon.  Police were able to free the remaining students and capture the four gunmen without further injury.  The gunmen were initially identified as school security guards, but later as small-town gangsters 22- to 25-years-old, looking for easy money.

Both of the girls were taken to Children's Hospital Los Angeles where the older girl was listed in serious but stable condition.  The younger girl was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder.  The two boys were also arrested, one for providing the weapon and the other for tampering with evidence.

Bisley Park Primary School, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Nearly two months ago, a man tried to molest a 13-year-old girl at Bisley Park Primary School.  The school didn't inform the girl's parents and today, the man succeed in raping her.  The young teen had gone into a restroom when the man attacked her.  He ripped open her uniform and raped her in the school's restroom.  When the brutal attack was over, she was covered in blood as she ran back to her class, trying to cover her body with her torn dress.  A female teacher took her to the hospital and the school principal, Brian Killeen, called her mother.  The next day, security at the school was tightened with all gates locked (they were normally left open) and visitors now had to sign in (before they didn't have to).  Police were still searching for the rapist when this news story went to print.
